Bridge to Somewhere: Queensboro Bridge Turning 100

1010wins.com - Bridge to Somewhere: Queensboro Bridge Turning 100

- F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about it. Simon and Garfunkel sang about it. Now the Queensboro Bridge is turning 100.

Monday is the 100th anniversary of first day that cars crossed the 3,724-foot bridge between Queens and Manhattan.

Fitzgerald praised the view from the bridge in ``The Great Gatsby,'' and Paul Simon wrote about it in ``The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy).''

The steel and stone bridge was designed by architect Henry Hornbostel.

Whitestone Bridge Reopens after Sign Collapses onto Roadway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- The Whitestone Bridge reopened at around 7 p.m. Friday -- six hours after a construction truck crashed into an overhead road sign sending the sign crashing onto the roadway.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a boon truck driven by a MTA Bridges and Tunnels contractor struck an overhead sign on the Queensbound (southbound) plaza of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge near the Queens anchorage, according to the MTA.

The impact took down the sign and the gantry -- the metal system that supports signs -- blocking all five lanes (three southbound and two Bronx-bound lanes, and closing the bridge in both directions.
