'Singin` in the Rain' is adjudged the greatest movie musical ever by AFI


LOS ANGELES - The American Film Institute's list of 25 Greatest Movie Musicals has 'Singin` in the Rain' at the top of the list. The film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1952 was named as the best at The Big Picture: AFI`s Greatest Movie Musicals at the Hollywood Bowl.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association judged that the movie starring Gene Kelly and Donald O`Connor along with Debbie Reynolds as the most memorable musical ever. The jury for this particular list consisted of more than 500 film artists, composers, musicians, film critics and historians. Over 250 films were evaluated.

"West Side Story" was adjudged the second best musical, while "The Wizard of Oz," "The Sound of Music" and "Cabaret" made up the top five. The list was created in order to rekindle interest in the classic American cinema, the AFI said. "Chicago" (No. 12) and "Moulin Rouge!" (No. 25) were the only films made in the 21st century that made it to the list.
