KATIE BRINGS UP THE REAR

KATIE Couric, after starting Sept. 5 at the top of the network evening news ratings, has settled in at third place. The perky newscaster - who left the "Today" show to take over the anchor chair of Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather at CBS - is getting beaten by both Charlie Gibson at ABC and Brian Williams at NBC. "She hasn't hurt CBS; she hasn't helped," said Mediaweek's Marc Berman. "Bottom line, she wasn't worth the investment." Couric is getting paid $45 million over three years. CBS spokesman Gil Schwartz said, "We're proud of the newscast. We're right on track. We're the only ones up in ratings over the past year. The other guys are down." The ratings for the evening newscasts from Sept. 18 through Oct. 20 show CBS up 8 percent over a year ago with 7.4 million viewers, NBC down 8 percent at 8.5 million, and ABC down 5 percent with 7.9 million. "She's not that far behind," said Berman.
