Mel Gibson gives 1st media interview since anti-Semitic rant

Director Mel Gibson, who made headlines around the world when he gave an anti-Semitic rant while being pulled over for drunk driving in July, has given his first media interview since the arrest.

ABC's Good Morning America announced the Australian actor sat down for an interview with Diane Sawyer in southern California. The two-part interview will appear Oct. 12 and 13th.

Actor-director Mel Gibson, seen in a police booking photo taken on July 28, 2006, will appear on Good Morning America next week for his first interview since his arrest.

The interview is a segment of the morning show. "It’s not going to be the entire Good Morning America," said ABC publicist Bridgette Maney.

Alan Nierob, Gibson's spokesman, would not divulge what the director said, only saying that the 50-year-old director has met with members of the Jewish community who have been "welcoming and supporting."

Gibson was stopped for speeding in the early hours of July 28. Police reports said he launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer whether he was Jewish and making offensive comments.

The director, who starred in the Lethal Weapon movie series and won a directing Oscar for Braveheart in 1995, later apologized twice for his anti-Semitic statements.

He pleaded no contest on Aug. 17 to charges of impaired driving and agreed to serve three years' probation, pay a fine and attend alcohol rehabilitation classes.

Nierob said Gibson was on an "ongoing program of recovery."
